If you have been wondering where to see top-notch live comedy in Western North Carolina's most dynamic city, look no further.
Based in Asheville's vibrant, bustling River Arts District, The Magnetic Theater—featured in the New York Times and many other prominent newspapers and magazines—prides itself on being the only theater in the southeast to produce solely original work. Since its inception, the theater has been a venue for wildly inventive and uproarious comic performances. The Magnetic Theater will be relocating to a new space in Asheville soon. Updates about upcoming shows will be available on their official website, but audiences can still catch their latest comedy show in the River Arts District through the end of March.
Known as "the funniest place in Asheville," Elaine's Dueling Piano Bar—located in the elegant and historic Grove Park Inn—is always a great time, and one of the most rollicking places to usher in the weekend. "Friday Night Live at Elaine's with Disclaimer Comedy" features a sparkling and hilarious array of local and regional comedians. For a fun night out, visit the Piano Bar on any Friday night. The show begins at 8:15. It is followed by Asheville's best dueling pianos and sing along at 9:30. The comedy show has no cover charge, and is an ideal place for couples or groups to come laugh the night away.
The Disclaimer Stand-Up Comedy Lounge is housed in The Southern Kitchen and Bar Dirty South Lounge (a local favorite). It is one of the most popular comedy venues in the area. The fun starts, free of charge, at 9pm every Wednesday night. This open mic comedy show means everyone is welcome to take the stage, from professionals comics to folks who just want to try their hand at a little stand-up. Audience members and comics should prepare for the unpredictable. It may be hilariously good or hilariously bad—but a fabulous time is guaranteed to be had by all. The Disclaimer's creed is "Excellence in Stagecraft, Innovation, Crowd Pleasure and Excellence." The Disclaimer Stand-up Lounge usually draws a big turnout. The Laugh Your Asheville Off annual comedy festival claims to be the largest comedy festival in the Southeast. In just over five years, this comedy festival has become one of the most highly regarded and anticipated comedy events in the region. Every year, the event draws agents, managers, and professionals from all over the nation. Their presence provides local and regional talent with the opportunity to showcase their gifts, make audiences laugh, and maybe even hit the big time. In 2013, the guest list boasts a stellar lineup of well-known and upcoming comics, so it is bound to leave you rolling in the aisles. This year the Laugh Your Asheville Off festival will take place at the Diana Wortham Theater in Downtown Asheville, and will run from Aug. 15-17.
