What possesses ordinarily sane people to jump in Lake Lure on a frigid January day? For many people staying at Asheville resort cabins, the sheer novelty of the annual Lake Lure New Year’s Day Polar Plunge gives them an exciting way to start the year.
Others want the free toboggan so they can proudly show off their bravery. A lot of people just think it’s a good time.
The Polar Plunge will be held at noon New Year’s Day. Register from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The fee, which includes the prized toboggan, is $20. For more information, visit their Facebook page, the Hickory Nut Gorge Chamber of Commerce website or call (828) 253-0540.
Many wear costumes, and prizes will be awarded for best costume, youngest and oldest plunger, and the farthest plunge.
After more than a hundred other spirited souls splash into Lake Lure, they all dry off and warm up by the bonfires with hot chocolate.
Proceeds benefit the Hickory Nut Gorge Chamber of Commerce.
Lake Lure is located in the scenic Hickory Nut Gorge, southwest of Asheville. The area is home to Chimney Rock State Park and the Town of Lake Lure, which offers shopping and restaurants. The Rocky Broad is also a popular Asheville trout fishing destination.
