The holiday season brings many visitors to Asheville resort cabins, and the Grove Park Inn’s annual National Gingerbread House Competition always pleases guests.
Whether you are here for an Asheville romantic getaway or a family trip, this event will definitely put you in the holiday mood.
The entirely edible works of art will be on display this year from Nov. 20 through Jan. 2.
Now in its 21st year, the annual competition doesn’t require submissions to be houses, despite the name. You might see mangers with shepherds, Christmas trees or Santa’s sleigh.
Many of them feature such meticulous detail, you might find it hard to believe they are made from gingerbread.
In fact, they have to be made of 75 percent gingerbread, but the rest can be candy, gum paste, fondant, pastillage, chocolate, royal icing and other decorative baking materials. No non-edible components are allowed.
Submissions are judged by overall appearance, originality and creativity, difficulty, precision and consistency of theme.
Competitors from four categories – child, youth, teen and adult – compete for cash prizes, so these creations get seriously fancy.
But look – don’t touch. Even though each submission is entirely edible, they are for everyone’s enjoyment. At least until their rightful owners get to take them home.
Admission to the National Gingerbread House Competition is free. The display is open to non-resort guests from Sunday through Thursday.
