Here are some ideas for a festive holiday season in Asheville:
There’s always a warm welcome at Biltmore Estate for the holidays. Visit America’s largest home to ring in the Christmas season, with a 35-feet tree gracing the front entrance. See the mansion in Late 19th and Early 20th Century holiday décor, with Christmas trees bedecked with ornaments in every room. Opt for the additional candlelight tour in the evening, enjoy a meal at any of Biltmore’s fine restaurants, and tour the winery and estate property. Ask about our discounted rate for tours of Biltmore this holiday season, available only to our guests. Our staff is happy to make dinner reservations, too.
After a day or evening at Biltmore Estate, visit nearby Biltmore Village for a Dickens Christmas and enjoy a glass of eggnog or spiced cider or a light meal at area establishments. Take some time out for holiday shopping.
Gingerbread House Display at Grove Park Inn
The annual National Gingerbread House competition takes place at the Grove Park Inn from Nov. 20-Jan. 2, 2013 and it’s not to be missed. This year marks the contest’s 20th year. Visitors to Grove Park Inn can see the displays from Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. Last year there were over 200 entries and a grand prize of $7,500 for the winner. Don’t miss this spectacular display of handmade gingerbread houses. Relax by the roaring fireplace in the Grove Park Inn lobby afterward. This is a great choice for cherished time with family and friends.
See a Holiday Show in Asheville
See the Montford Players’ rendition of A Christmas Carol from Dec. 6-23, 2012 in the Masonic Temple downtown. The Montford Players perform Shakespeare in the Park every year, and are a well-respected acting troupe in town. Or, attend Inspecting Carol, a Christmas comedy, from November 13-December 2nd or The Santaland Diaries from December 13-16 at the Asheville Community Theater. The NC Stage Company is also showing their unique version of Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol from December 19-30th. The play examines Scrooge’s former business partner, Marley, and uncovers his view on the holidays. It brings a new perspective to the traditional version of A Christmas Carol.
