Asheville Area Arts Council/The Artery
The Artery is a multipurpose exhibition and event facility and acts as the headquarters for the Asheville Area Arts Council. It includes a visitor center, classroom for workshops and programs, display space for fine arts and crafts, and more. Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
This Carl Sandburg Home National Historic site is approximately 30 miles south of Asheville and honors the accomplishments of Carl Sandburg. Explore the historic home and visit the farm and trails. Open daily 9am-5pm (closed December 25).

Asheville Museum of Science
The Asheville Museum of Science is located on level one of the Pack Place Education, Arts & Science Center and features expansive exhibits of minerals, stones, gems, fossils, the history of mining in North Carolina and more. The museum is open 10am to 5pm Wednesday through Saturday and 1pm to 5pm Sunday.

Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum
For car buffs, North Carolina doesn’t have many collections to rival this set of rare and vintage automobiles at the Estes-Winn Antique Car Museum (along with some original horse-drawn carriages and a 1922 American La France fire engine). The museum is open April through December from 10am to 5pm Monday through Sunday. Free admission (donations welcome).

Folk Art Center
Home to the Southern Highland Craft Guild, The Folk Art Center showcases traditional and contemporary crafts of the Southern Appalachians. It includes a bookstore, three galleries, a library and the Allanstand Craft Shop. The center is open daily 9am to 5pm January through March and 9am to 6pm April through December (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day).

Smith-McDowell House Museum
The Smith-McDowell House was built approximately 20 years before the Civil War by one of the period’s most influential citizens. It is Asheville’s oldest surviving dwelling and is on the National Register of Historic Places. This heritage center gives visitors an intriguing look at 19th Century life in Asheville.

Thomas Wolfe Memorial
The Thomas Wolfe Memorial is the novelist’s boyhood home and setting for Look Homeward, Angel. This National Historic Landmark has been fully restored and is open for tours 9am to 5pm Tuesday through Saturday and 9 to 5pm Sunday. Cost is $5 for adults and $2 (7yr – 17yr) students and 6 and under free.

YMI Cultural Center
The YMI Cultural Center (Young Men’s Institute) is an historic landmark and one of the foremost African-American cultural centers in the United States. The center features numerous exhibits and produces many special events throughout the year, including the annual three-day Goombay African-Caribbean street festival.
