NC Mountains Vacation Guide

Staying at Greg’s Cabin at Willow Winds proved to be a great choice. I loved having my green tea in the morning on the outdoor balcony looking out at the Tulip trees and listening to the sounds of the fountains. The location was perfect: close to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Downtown Asheville, and the Airport. There is so much to do here in this beautiful and majestic landscape!

Willow Winds is family friendly. There are plenty of things for children to do, including playing on two playgrounds. There are games such as water wars, ping-pong, badminton, basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, bocce ball and outdoor chess to be enjoyed by kids of all ages. For rainy days, we have games, such as foosball and air hockey, on our new game porch. Our extensive complimentary collection of over 1,000 videos includes a large number of children’s movies and PG13 movies as well as the most recent video releases for adults. Many children have caught their first fish in our well stocked trout pond.

For outside activities, there is nothing more invigorating than an early morning hike in the clear mountain mornings. The Mountain-to-the-Sea Trail, which joins our property, is one of the most beautiful nature trails in America. After only a few minutes walk, you are in deep virgin forests, because the trail is bordered on both sides by forests of the Biltmore Company. The trail is ideal for both serious hikers and casual walkers. The weather is perfect for all kinds of activities, such as fishing in our newly restocked pond.

For mountain-bike enthusiasts, the nearby Pisgah National Forest has over 200 miles of mountain-bike trails. The Pisgah District has been ranked as one of the top five mountain-biking areas in the United States by USA Today and leading cycling magazines.

For adults, there are extensive trails to hike (see above), a putting green to sharpen the skills of golfers and a well equipped exercise room for the health conscious. You will never be unpleasantly surprised with a large bill at checkout for movie watching and games played by your children. All of these activities are free for our guests.

In addition, guests have access to “Asheville Racquet Club” – Indoor/outdoor tennis courts, racquetball courts, swimming pool (summer) and weight room (just 3 miles away) at a nominal fee.

For off-site recreation, there is plenty to do in the area such as white-water rafting, gem mining, snow skiing in season (Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is 45 minutes away). Cataloochee Ski Resort (featured in the November / December in AAA Go Travel Magazine) Located in Maggie Valley off Route 19 (about 30 miles and 45 minutes from Asheville). Skiing, Tubing, snowboarding, ice-skating and other winter activities. Lessons for beginners as well as for skiers looking to improve. For a complete guide to Western North Carolina ski areas, try Ski North Carolina. Also, guests may visit such area attractions as Cherokee or the Flat Rock Playhouse.

There are more than 50 public and semi-private golf courses in Western North Carolina, many within a few miles of Willow Winds.

Willow Winds is unique in that it is in a forest that joins the Blue Ridge Parkway and some of the Biltmore forest lands, yet it is within 15 minutes of downtown Asheville. In recent years, the downtown has undergone a renaissance and is now a lively place with an interesting night life. It is small enough for pedestrians to enjoy, yet eclectic enough to match a variety of interests. It has many charming bistros, quaint shops, and entertainment attractions.

A wonderful, peaceful, relaxing, quiet, renewing respite for 2 local parent caretakers. Andrew’s Attic and Willow Winds were perfect for our “staycation”. Your attention to detail on the grounds and in the cabins contributed to the pleasant two days we spent here. Thank you. We will be back!
