The Basilica of Saint Lawrence, designed and built in 1905 by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino and architect R.S. Smith, is the only basilica in Western North Carolina. It's dome, with a span of 58 by 82 feet, is believed to be the largest freestanding elliptical dome in North America. The basilica features many remarkable statues, architectural carvings, and elaborate stained glass windows. It also contains Guastavino's crypt.
