With a chill in the air and the fall season quickly passing us by, there is so much to look forward to during the holidays in Asheville. Some of our most breathtaking events take place in the next couple of months, so plan ahead for what will be an unforgettable adventure in our unique mountain city.
Candlelight Evenings at Biltmore: Nov 3 – Jan 6, 2018
Every year the Biltmore Estate opens it’s doors after dark, just for a holiday experience that is beyond words. Biltmore Candlelight Evening tours are special self-guided excursions through the massive house, complete with dozens of elaborately decorated trees and mantles – all lit with cozy candlelight and flickering flames from the fireplaces. Hundreds of lights twinkle throughout the house, for a nostalgic feel not unlike some of the original holidays of Vanderbilt’s time. These tours require a general admission daytime pass, as well as a $25 upgrade to tour after dark. The Candlelight Evenings are a non-refundable/non-transferable reservation, and you may book through us!
Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum: Nov 17 – Dec 31, 2017
Navigate a landscape filled with over 500,000 artfully-displated LED lights at the NC Arboretum. As the temperature drops, the color of flowers is replaced by brightly-lit bulbs. This creates a winter wonderland that has to be seen to be believed. Open nightly from 6 – 10 PM (make sure to get to the gates before 9 PM). These tickets must be bought ahead of time online. Once there, you have an option of different treats to purchase such as hot cocoa, beer or cider. Savory Thyme cafe also offers light meals, and a special buffet on holidays and Friday/Saturdays after Nov 24. Reservations recommended.
National Gingerbread House Competition – Nov 26 – Jan 4, 2018
Asheville is honored every year to be the home of the National Gingerbread House Competition, located at the Grove Park Inn. America’s most talented artists build displays from all edible materials, creating a sweet masterpiece. Judging takes place on November 20, and is available to view to the public on November 26th. Take lots of photos, then relax by the large fireplaces in the lobby. There is a $20 parking fee, but half goes towards local non-profits.
Old-Fashioned Dickens of a Christmas Festival – Dec 1 -2, 2017
Historic Biltmore Village enters a time warp once a year for the Old-fashioned Dickens Festival. With carolers singing ye olde carols, and costumed shop keepers selling their goods. You’ll feel like you’ve went back in time. The Biltmore Village area is filled with some of the best food and shopping that Asheville has to offer. You can watch the festivities and shop for the holidays while you are there. Did we mention roasted chestnuts? Starts at 6PM, tree lighting on Friday.
