From the blog

We came here for a short getaway from our home & faily in Michigan and we’ve had a wonderful time. The Willow Winds property proved to be all that it had promised and then some. We hope to return with our kids sometime. Asheville was a lot of fun too — very different from what we’re used to. Our favorite eatery was Jack of the Wood’s, We tried the Scotch eggs, some local brew’s and the Sheppard’s pie…all accompanied by some very talented bluegrass musicians.

Thanks Willow Winds for a great place to stay

Winter Activities in Asheville 2017

Visiting Asheville in the winter? Good idea! Our city offers so many activities to entertain the whole family – whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, history buff, or perhaps wanting something a little more romantic.

Winter Hikes

Every year, the winter crispness brings a refreshing opportunity to hike trails unlike ever before. Well-worn hikes look new and fresh, the views are stellar thanks to low leaf obstruction, and perhaps best of all, the woods are absent one pervasive tenant: irritating bugs. This is a wonderful time to hike the area, and here is a small sampling of must-see winter excursions – just remember your coat!

Visit the Dupont State Waterfalls

No matter the season, Dupont is a must when visiting the area. The waterfalls during this time of year can vary, as the lower elevation of Dupont allows for a more mild season than some of the other hikes on our list. However if the temperature drops enough, you can see natural ice sculptures along the streams and down the falls. It’s a beautiful example of nature in a different state, and can only be witnessed this time of year. There are three main falls at Dupont, and the hike is close to parking, so you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy the views. As with all the hikes on this list, keep in mind that spots on rocks and along the trails can become slippery, so please use caution when exploring the terrain. Visit us in the office for more information and directions.

Stroll the NC Arboretum

A chilly adventure in a gorgeous hiking and biking spot, with the convenience of being located only 7 miles from our cabins. The NC Arboretum has flora native to our beautiful mountains, and offers a “cell phone tour” that sends information and details about specific trail stops to your phone.

Mountain to Sea Trail

At the top of our property is an access point to the Mountain to Sea Trail. This trail runs from Clingman’s Dome at the Tennessee border all the way to the Outer Banks of North Carolina (over 1,000 miles long!) This trail runs along the portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway that is close to our property, so the hike is not only lovely, but just right outside your cabin door. Then when you are done, you can warm up in the hot tub, or by the wood-burning fireplace!

La Zoom Kids Comedy Bus

Entertain your little ones with Asheville’s comedy bus tour – now available in a Kids Tour! This 4 and up tour will offer loads of information for locals and tourists alike, but in a kid-friendly way! The comedy skits will have your child – and you – laughing along the way. Visit the tour website for more information.

Biltmore: Designed for Drama

From February 10th to July 4th 2017, The Biltmore Estate will have an exhibit displaying costumes from movies based on some of Vanderbilt’s favorite works of literature. The costumes in “Designed for Drama” will be displayed next to the book each movie was based on – each book from Vanderbilt’s massive collection.

We found Willow winds while researching for our 2nd annual girl’s trip ~ three sisters and our wonderful mother. We had a wonderful time at Beautiful Biltmore! It was nice to come back to “Mom’s Manor” and relax. We loved the pond, fountains, and hot tub. After a day of walking it was a nice retreat.

Thanks for a most relaxing and memorable atmosphere to enjoy time with my sisters and mother. We Loved It!!
